This past weekend we went out with the Iguana Divers on a whale watching tour out of the Mal País fishing village. It was fabulous and I highly recommend it! Not only did we see humpback whales and their calves, we also saw a group of male humpbacks frolicking about. It is an incredible and humbling experience to see these huge, graceful creatures from so close. It was truly spectacular. The tour was educational, beautiful, inspirational and very exciting!
Did you know that Costa Rica is the only country in the world that gets humpback whale migrations for both the southern and northern hemispheres? And in our area, Mal País becomes a hotspot for withnessing this exhilarating experience, as it plays host to these two distinct humpback whale migration seasons. In this blog post, we'll delve into the captivating world of humpback whales, explore why they choose Costa Rica's tropical waters, and uncover the remarkable phenomenon of dual migrations that makes this country stand out as a premier whale watching destination.

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are among the most recognizable and majestic marine mammals on the planet. These gentle giants are known for their impressive size, reaching lengths of up to 50 feet and weighing as much as 40 tons. Humpbacks are characterized by their distinctive long pectoral fins, knobbly heads, and intricate patterns of white markings on their dark skin, which are unique to each individual. What truly sets humpbacks apart, however, is their mesmerizing behavior, including breaching, tail slapping, and singing intricate songs that can be heard over vast distances.
Costa Rica stands out on the global map of humpback whale migrations for an extraordinary reason that it is the only country in the world that witnesses whale migrations from both the northern and southern hemispheres at different times of the year. This geographical advantage results in two distinct humpback whale seasons, making Costa Rica a truly exceptional whale watching destination.

The Southern Migration: From July to October, thousands of humpback whales makes its way to Costa Rica from the southern hemisphere, mainly from the Antarctic region. These whales travel northward to breed and give birth in the warmer waters of Central America. Witnessing these mothers nurturing their newborn calves is a heartwarming sight and a testament to the innate connection between these incredible creatures and their environment.
The Northern Migration: From December to April, humpback whales from the northern hemisphere embark on their journey to Costa Rica's tropical waters. These whales are primarily from the North Pacific population, which spans from California to Alaska. Seeking warmer breeding and calving grounds, these migratory whales cover thousands of miles to reach the balmy waters of Costa Rica. During this period, lucky observers might witness breathtaking displays of breaching and tail-slapping as the whales communicate and play in our waters.

You might wonder why humpback whales travel such vast distances to visit Costa Rica's tropical waters. The answer lies in the unique characteristics of these waters. The warm temperatures and nutrient-rich currents create an ideal environment for breeding, calving, and nursing. Additionally, the relatively shallow coastal waters make it easier for the whales to navigate and communicate with each other, enhancing the overall whale watching experience for visitors.
The opportunity to witness these majestic creatures swimming, breaching, tail-slapping, and nurturing their calves in the warm tropical waters is a humbling reminder of the delicate balance of our planet's ecosystems. So, whether you're a dedicated nature enthusiast or someone seeking an unforgettable adventure to sahre with your kids and loved ones, make sure to put humpback whale watching on your bucket list. It's a journey that promises to leave you in awe of the beauty and wonder of the natural world.
