The return of the Scarlet Macaws II

Jen Harter | 07/26/2019

Today was a historical day for the southern Nicoya Peninsula! Scarlet macaws are now flying free in the Cabuya and Cabo Blanco vecinity.

With the combined efforts of Wild Sun Rescue Center, the Fundacion Asprolapa, the MINAE, and the help of many voluteers and generous community donations the first ten scarlet macaws have been released in Cabuya. It was a very emotional and very exciting day for many people that have worked hard to get here.

Wild Sun Rescue Center has been working closely with Asprolapa the last couple years to follow their succesful formula in their lapas reintroduction program that has been so successful in the Tambor and Paquera area. Today was the fifth release for Asprolapa since 1996 and they have brought their insight and wisdom to work alongside Wild Sun for a successful program in Cabuya.

Wild Sun will continue to breed and reintroduce eight to ten macaws in this area per year. They currently have six adults and two chicks that will be released in in the next couple years. Once about fifty macaws have been releasedn in the Cabuya area, their plan is to initiate a reintrodction program out of Malpais, and eventually Playa Hermosa as well.

Scarlet macaws have a 20 km radius so it won't be long before we start to spot and hear these amazing birds all around this area.
