For those seeking adventure, the country offers a vast and diverse array of options available to explore.

Panoramic shots of Arenal Volcano’s iconic mount. Bird’s eye views of the expansive rainforest canopy as a group of scarlet macaws swoop by. Magic hour snaps of the white-sand beaches of both coastlines. Be it on a video advert or the stills that greet tourists as soon as they set foot in the airport, the aforementioned scenes have become intrinsically linked with Costa Rica’s iconography. They are, in many ways, some of the country’s greatest hits, the eternally appealing attractions that have helped position the nation as one of the most enticing tourist options in Latin America. But as any local or expat will tell you, there’s more to Costa Rica than what’s shown in these now canonical clips.

As a destination that’s celebrated and recognized for its unparalleled nature, the possibilities for off the beaten path activities are endless. There’s a reason that the country is not only a favorite of beach lovers and luxury travelers, but also of backpacking surfers, passionate nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts.

Here are some of our favorite destinations for those looking to experience the country through some local favorites and adventurous experiences.

Río Celeste

Famous for its namesake hue, Río Celeste is one of the most picturesque sights Costa Rica has to offer. This teal blue river is part of the Tenorio Volcano National Park, and offers visitors a 6km trail that takes around 3 hours total. If you want to take a plunge in this oasis, there are plenty of options neighboring the park!

Bajos del Toro

Widely considered as one of the most stunning waterfalls in Costa Rica, Bajos del Toro offers visitors the unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of nature’s elemental forces in their full extent. The waterfall plunges through expansive cliffs into a gorgeous pond of blue water and vibrant greenery all around. This is the climax of an immersive hike where you’ll be one with Costa Rica’s abundant biodiversity.

Rincón de la vieja

As one of Guanacaste’s most important national parks, Rincón de la Vieja is one of the most enveloping experiences Costa Rica has to offer. You can take a 7,5km trail to see the Von Seebach and Rincón de la Vieja craters, a 5,1km hike towards La Cangreja and Escondidas waterfalls, walk to the Río Blanco pond, or immerse yourself in the Santa María sector, where you’ll find thermal waters and the Bosque Encantado waterfalls. Simply put, you won’t run out of things to do in this magical natural wonderland!

Pacuare

Pacuare is classified as one of the best rafting rivers in the whole world. With its 18 miles of class III and IV rapids, and surrounded by some of the most stunning landscapes in the Caribbean, this is a bucket list destination for anyone who enjoys water sports, adrenaline and gorgeous scenery.

Chirripó National Park

Less an attraction than a cleansing ritual, climbing mount Chirripó is seen as a life changing experience to most. The jaw-dropping views, the freezing badlands, and the exotic flora and fauna only to be found in the area’s altitude make the journey to the top something akin to arriving at a whole different planet.
