Somos Congos!

Josie Green | 01/03/2023

Happy New Year! We hope that you had a wonderful time with family and friends over the holidays and we wish you an excellent 2023.

As we move in to the new year, we want to start highlighting the various non-profit projects that amazing, proactive people from the community have founded. These projects are often time-consuming and challenging, but thanks to the perserverance and generous spirit of those involved, they are making a positive impact for all of us who live on the peninsula.

One such project is Somos Congos.

Somos Congos was set up by a committed group of locals, who were saddened by the ongoing electrocutions of monkeys on the electricity wires and wanted to do something about it. Originally the idea was to install monkey-rope bridges throughout town, allowing the troops of monkeys to cross the roads without having to use the electricity wires. Whilst they continue to install bridges in areas where it is deemed necessary, Somos Congos has expanded its activities and are doing amazing work to help protect the families of monkeys that inhabit the forest around us. Their activities include - reforestation drives, education and training for the local community, rescue of injured monkeys, prevention and mitigation (including the insulation of 87 electricity transformers to date), working together and building relationships with the ICE (the state electricity company), the Wildsun Rescue Center in Cabuya and the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve.

It is a huge benefit to have such a dedicated group of people advocating on behalf of the monkey populations that have been impacted by the continued development of our area. Somos Congos welcome the participation of everyone that would like to get involved in their activities. You can take a look at their projects here - https://somoscongos.com/. If you live full time in town you might be interested in joining the group Whatsapp to stay informed about any training activities coming up. And of course any donations to their cause would be gladly welcomed - https://somoscongos.com/donate. They also sell t-shirts, mugs and other products at the Organic Market every Saturday.

If you love watching the escapades of the monkeys in the trees while you are here, we encourage you to see how you can get involved with Somos Congos.
