Community Coming Together in a Time of Crisis

Josie Green | 04/05/2020

Amidst the uncertainty of the present moment, there are some amazing things happening here in Santa Teresa.  The community has come together with some great initiatives to help neighbors in need.

Many residents of Santa Teresa, as in the rest of Costa Rica and the world, have been hit hard by the measures taken globally to stem the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.  With restaurants, shops and hotels closed, many people have lost their jobs and are facing uncertain times with no income.

Covid-19 Emergency Fund For Santa Teresa and Mal Pais:

We are very grateful to the amazing people at the Asociación de Desarrollo Integral de Mal Pais y Santa Teresa (the ADI) and those that work with them, who are raising funds to provide support to the most vulnerable members of our community.

The team at the ADI have set up the Covid 19 Emergency Fund For Santa Teresa and Mal Pais, with the aim of providing food and sanitary products to families within our community that need help.  So far 400 families have been identified that require help with food and other essential household supplies.  The idea of the Emergency Fund is to provide a monthly food basket to these families (each costing aproximately $50) for a three month period, in order to help them through this very difficult moment.  The goal is to raise $60,000 to cover this cost.  As at the 5th April, the Fund has raised $15,603.

If you would like to help this initiative, you can donate using the two links below or see the next section to join the raffle organised by A Week Awake.

Amazing People Doing Amazing Things:

Here are some more examples of amazing people doing amazing things in our community and we would like to thank them all:

  • Private individuals across town have been reaching out to those in need of help, collecting boxes of food and supplies, and delivering them to people's houses. Thank you so much to all the kind-hearted people that have been quietly helping their neighbors in this difficult time.  You know who you are!
  • The Somos Foundation - thank you for donating $1,600 to support the Covid-19 Emergency Fund and a further $1,000 for the creation of a community garden.  The ADI will be creating a feasability plan for the garden and will be sharing details of this shortly.
  • A Week Awake has organized an amazing raffle with fantastic prizes, in order to raise funds for the Covid-19 Emergency Fund.  As of yesterday they had sold 420 raffle tickets in just a 72 hour period.  There are 50 really quite amazing prizes to be won, including domestic flights, hotel accommodation, jewelry, dinner for two, etc.  Each raffle ticket costs $10 and the raffle will be done on the 13th April - so make sure you purchase your ticket before then!  Thank you to the large number of local businesses who have donated prizes to this cause.  To see the full details of this amazing raffle, take a look at the A Week Awake instagram story here - https://www.instagram.com/stories/aweekawake/
  • The supermarkets (Super Costa, Super Ronnys and Super Hacienda) have all set up a donation station where people can make food and other donations to those in need.  Thank you so much to the supermarkets and to all those who have donated.
