New Immigration Laws being Debated to Make it Easier for Remote Workers to live in Costa Rica

Good news for remote workers! The Costa Rican legislative assembly is currently debating a new law that will make it easier for those earning their income remotely via the internet to live and work in Costa Rica. The law is called the "Law to Attract International Workers and Remote Service Providers" and it proposes the granting of one-year visas to remote workers. To qualify for the visa you have to work on-line, generate your income from sources outside of Costa Rica and be able to prove that you earn $5,000 per month or more. You would also need to have medical insurance for the duration of your stay within the country. The visa would cover the remote worker and his/her immediate family and would allow eligible people to stay in the country for one year, with the possibility of renewing for an additional six months. You can leave anytime and there is no required time commitment to keep the status.

Here in Santa Teresa, we have been seeing a steady increase in long term residents that live in town and work remotely. This trend increased once the high-speed fiber-optic was installed in 2017, but has jumped further still during 2020 amidst the global movement towards remote working. This proposed new law will no doubt further the trend and will be welcomed by all the digital nomads in town! For some great tips on moving to Santa Teresa and working remotely from the beach, take a look at this blog post - https://www.langstonrealty.com/posts/top-tips-for-working-remotely-from-santa-teresa-costa-rica
