Can My Kids Thrive Here?

Moving your family to a small surf town in Costa Rica sounds like a dream come true. However, once the salty breezes fade and the sunsets feel normal, the bigger questions begin to creep in—particularly if you are moving with kids.

  • Can we have a simple beach life without compromising their education?
  • Where will my kids go to school?
  • Will they be challenged, supported, and make friends?
  • Can they get a good bilingual education here?

If you are asking these questions, you're not alone. I have helped dozens of families relocate to Santa Teresa over the past decade, and I have also experienced the process personally while navigating the choices of education options as a parent of 3 kids, and a professional building a life in Santa Teresa.

I have good news - you currently do not have to sacrifice a great education for the pura vida lifestyle you crave. Santa Teresa and its surrounding communities, along with supporting schools, have developed into a truly international community with amazing bilingual schools. You can find academic focused schools, nature-based education, or even a Waldorf inspired curriculum with many choices in between appropriate for every family to consider. This guide will take you on a tour of three of the most important private schools near Santa Teresa that are supporting the whole child, not just in academics, but socially, emotionally, and globally.

How to Choose the Right Fit for Your Family

Making the right school choice depends on several factors:

  • I would say Gaia is best for early years  although the location doesn't work for everyone. Futuro Verde is great for parents and children that thrive in a more traditional academic enviornment. Hermosa Valley School is somewhere in the middle academically while also accommodating kids of all ages with a strong preschool program and a solid high school experience.
  • Education philosophy: Do you want a more traditional structured curriculum, or a more holistic nature-based model?
  • Language development: All three schools are bilingual, but with varying degrees of Spanish immersion and English support.
  • Lifestyle considerations/location: Your choice of school can impact where you live - are you closer to the jungle, or the beach or the traditional town infrastructure.

Pairing Education With Community

The school your children attend will automatically dictate how you interact with your family daily. A lot of expat families will choose to live close to the school they select for their children to facilitate simple logistics, stronger connections to the community, and with other similar families. All schools provide a good bus service.
