Experience the Best of Mal Pais

Mal Pais is a coastal town that stretches over the south of the Nicoya Peninsula. Its name means “bad country” in Spanish, which legends say comes from the fact that during the dry season, the rivers and streams that feed the ocean become dry which makes it a bad place to live. Anyway, since the invention of public water supply Mal País has become famous for being a small town that attracts many tourists daily. If you want to visit Mal País, here are some of the things you can enjoy:

Bird Watching in Mal Pais

Mal País borders the Cabo Blanco National Park, a natural reserve only 30 minutes away from the town. Costa Rica offers an optimal geographic location where many species of birds both from the southern and the northern part of the continent, as well as endemic species, find the friendly weather and the plains that border the coastline irresistible. Additionally, the reserve hosts a plethora of flora that combine both dry forest and rainforest, which allows for a myriad of species to visit the premises, especially seabirds.

Rock Climbing in Mal Pais

Mal País is also the home of Rock Climbing Costa Rica, a business whose main goal is to offer all thrill-seekers the opportunity to climb the rocky formations that teem the area. Some of the areas where you can climb include the Cabo Blanco Reserve and the renowned Montezuma Waterfall, which offers not only the ideal crag but also a sweet waterhole to refresh after the workout. Beware that this type of activity requires good physical condition as well as permits and insurance, so be sure to book at least one week ahead.
