On the 20th July we had the first ADI Fundraiser Community Relay Race! It was held at Rocamar, with the aim of raising funds for the ADI of Santa Teresa and Mal Pais and the Santa Teresa School. The ADI is the local community association, which works together with the municipal government, members of the community and other non-profit organizations to create positive impacts for town - including in areas of infrastructure, security, sustainable development, education, and more.
It was such a fun day, with 18 teams participating in the race, which was followed by a raffle prize draw, great music and lots of delicious food and drinks. Click here to see some footage of the event .
A total of 18 teams signed up for the race, including our office team! The first leg of the race was a bike ride from Rocamar to Hermosa and back. The second leg was a run along the beach from Rocamar to La Lora and back (at high tide, ouch!). And the third leg was a paddle in the ocean, with contestants doing a lap between two lifeguards. The calibre of the teams was really quite high, with some true athletes participating. Despite coming in at last place, we had lots of fun and won a t-shirt for our efforts!
Lots of people turned up to watch and support the good cause, and it turned out to be a beautiful sunny afternoon for the event.
The goal was to raise $2,700 for the Santa Teresa public school. The school needed help fixing the leaks in their roof and replacing all the rain gutters. The funds raised from the inscriptions of the relay race all went towards the school, which exceeded the goal. A total of $3,600 was raised for the school.
Another $6,684 was raised from the raffle and from food and drink sales. Rocamar very kindly hosted and help organize the event, with all the profits going to the ADI. These funds will go to all the other community projects that the ADI is working on.
The ADI has a number of exciting projects that it is working on. These include a beautiful new community center to replace the old center that was sadly destroyed by a fallen tree and a new playground, which also had to be removed. The new center will be open for lectures, workshops, tutoring, assemblies, events and all types of community activities. Other projects that the ADI is working on include a plan to replace the plastic/saran/zinc fencelines of town with natural/living fences; ongoing work with the ICT on a security plan for the area; a mobile cinema that will be used for community movies and documentaries; and much more!

The ADI made some cool shirts in colaboration with AIP art for the event. They read "Vamos haciendo que todo esto sea desde el amor", meaning "Let's do all of this from a place of love". The tshirts are for sale at Balu , Santa Teresa, if you want to get one and show some support!!!
