The beach town itself tends to get all the buzz, but the natural wonders of its namesake beach are one of Peninsula de Nicoya’s undisputed highlights.

Amidst its meteoric rise to the top tier of Central American destinations, the Nicoya Peninsula has seen its quaint beach towns go from secluded hidden gems for surfers in the know and local connoisseurs, to some of the trendiest locations in Costa Rica’s already effervescent Northern Pacific coastline.

The recent growth in development and global interest has meant a healthy competition between the myriad of stunning white-sand beaches and eclectic ecosystems that flock the Nicoya Peninsula, all drawing the attention of tourists, investors and expats alike. The perks of any one of these close-knit communities over each other vastly depends on personal preferences and subjectivity, since each has its own unique charm and identity.

Due to its amalgamation of a vibrant bohemian atmosphere and world-class restaurants and amenities, Santa Teresa, the beach town, tends to be one of the preferred places to set base when exploring the area, a kind of international hub to lay back amidst the countless adventures at arm’s length. But beyond merely a colorful settlement, Santa Teresa’s beach itself is a highlight on its right.

The town’s wholesome vibe seamlessly blends into the beach aura, where the expansive white-sand trail, clear blue water and jungle create an engrossing backdrop for all kinds of activities. After all, with such marvelous surroundings, Santa Teresa beach has always been the epicenter of the town’s cultural life.

As soon as the first rays of sunlight spark the morning waves, surfers become an inseparable part of the scenery, both hopeful beginners getting their first taste of the Pacific and tested veterans riding more challenging tides. Those less enamored by such direct confrontation with the sea would perhaps better enjoy the endless offer of yoga classes, or simply strolling barefoot through the gentle coastline.

Once the sun starts to set, its rosy hue and accompanying soothing breeze serve as an invitation for those in town to gather around the relaxing ballad of crashing waves and crackling treetops. Many say the most spectacular sunsets in Costa Rica happen when the tide is low in Santa Teresa, exposing the colorful reefs and expanding the scene’s palette to an almost expressionistic rendering of the tropics.

With such magical sights, there’s not a shadow of a doubt about where Santa Teresa’s international acclaim comes from.
