Tambor is a sleepy little beach town located in the center of the beautiful Bahia Ballena (Whale’s Bay) facing the mouth of the Gulf of Nicoya. It is a very laid back area and hosts some beautiful hotels and features a wide array of nature focused activities. The large Tambor Beach sits in the middle of a large semi-circular bay and has a light grey sandy beach and very calm and protected waters that are ideal for swimming, kayaking, stand up paddling and fishing. This gorgeous bay is the perfect place to come and unwind from the business of life, it is the perfect location for someone who is looking for some peaceful surroundings or holidays.
At low tide the beach becomes quite expansive and flat. There is a fishermen’s dock on the south side of the bay and it is very easy to coordinate fishing tours, expeditions to Playa Los Muertos and Tortuga Island. Curú Wildlife refuge is also a very short drive away and there you can enjoy hiking trails, kayaking and bioluminescence tours that are pure magic. One of the highlights of Curú, Tortuga Island and surrounding areas is the fantastic snorkeling in the summer months. In this area it is also common to see humpback whales twice a year, there is a season January through March and again August through October. The Bay is full of marine life and spotting whales here is definitely a highlight! Offshore it is also common to see mega pods of dolphins. Surrounding the bay are the lush and beautiful mountains covered in tropical dry forest and also rolling farmland hills. The surrounding areas have some spectacular views for people who prefer to be up and overlooking the scenery.
The hotel chain Barceló has an all-inclusive hotel here, plus they also have the Los Delfines Gold Course and Residences in the bay. Aside from these two larger developments, there are lots of charming boutique hotels, restairants and lodges to choose from. One of the highlights of this area is Tango Mar Resort and gold course, and the high-end residential neighborhood there, which features some remarkable beachfront homes. The Town of Tambor has easy access from the Ferry of Paquera coming from Puntarenas, it is only a 30 minute drive from the ferry. The Drive form San Jose is about 4.5 hours and the flight is a short 20 minute puddle jump. The Tambor domestic airstrip sits right on the water which makes it one of Costa Rica’s most scenic landings! From Tambor you can get to Cobano in about 30 minutes and the towns of Santa Teresa and Montezuma in about 45 min. See our Tambor Properties For Sale.
